Stem Cell Therapy Protocol
At the Stem Cells Transplant Institute in Costa Rica, every treatment is designed with scientific rigor, patient safety, and personalized care.
Our four-step protocol is designed to promote safety and quality at every phase — from evaluation to follow-up — and aligns with recognized international standards for regenerative medicine.
Step 1
Initial medical evaluation
Every treatment begins with a thorough medical assessment conducted by our board-certified physicians specializing in regenerative and anti-aging medicine.
What Happens
- Comprehensive medical history review (online or in-person)
- Analysis of diagnosis, current treatments, and medications
- Screening for contraindications such as cancer, active infection, or organ failure
- Discussion of potential therapeutic benefits, expected outcomes, possible risks and informed consent process
Once approved, your physician designs a personalized regenerative plan tailored to your condition and goals.
Step 2
Cell harvesting & quality control
Our stem cell laboratory in San José follows the highest international safety standards.
This approach aims to ensure that every cell used in your treatment is processed under controlled and sterile conditions. There are two possible sources of cells: umbilical cord-derived mesenchymal stem cells (UC-MSCs) or adipose tissue-derived MSCs from the patient’s own sample (autologous therapy).
How the Cells Are Prepared
1. Donor Screening
All umbilical cord donors are tested for infectious diseases and relevant medical conditions
2. Cell Isolation
Stem cells are separated from the cord or tissue.
3. Expansion
The cells are gently grown in nutrient-rich conditions until enough are available for treatment.
4. Testing:
Each batch is checked for identity, purity, and sterility to confirm the cells meet quality specifications.
5. Storage
Cells are carefully frozen until the day of your therapy to preserve their integrity.
6. Verification
Every treatment vial includes a Certificate of Analysis reporting tests results on identity, sterility, and viability parameters.
In simple terms: we make sure every stem cell is clean, viable, and properly tested before it reaches you.
Step 3 – Administration of Stem Cells
Your treatment takes place in our certified medical facility under the care of experienced doctors and nurses.
We focus on making the process safe, comfortable, and carefully monitored from start to finish.
Procedure Overview:
Route of administration
Most stem cells are slowly given through an IV drip, similar to a standard hospital infusion, but other methods can be employed.
Duration
Approximately 1–2 hours per session.
Comfort
The procedure is generally well-tolerated; most patients relax or listen to music. Sedation isn’t generally needed but may sometimes be employed.
Monitoring
Your vital signs (blood pressure, heart rate, oxygen) are carefully watched throughout the infusion and afterward.
Every procedure is performed in a clean environment, with medical staff and emergency equipment always on hand for your safety.
Step 4 – Follow-Up & Ongoing Care
Typical timeline:
Initial progress check and symptom review
What Follow-Up Includes
- Review of changes in symptoms, energy, and daily functioning
- Questionnaires or assessments based on your specific condition
- Telemedicine calls for patients who live abroad
- Updated recommendations for continued care, physical therapy, or supplements if appropriate
Whether you live in Costa Rica or travel from abroad, we’ll stay connected to support your recovery and monitor your progress.
Frequently Asked Questions
From initial evaluation to follow-up, most protocols last between 3 to 5 days on-site, followed by remote check-ins for one year.
No. Stem cell therapy is an outpatient procedure. Patients can usually resume light activities within 24 hours, depending on individual medical clearance.
Some patients notice improvements within weeks, while others experience gradual changes over several months as cellular repair continues.
Responses vary between individuals, and no clinical outcome can be guaranteed.
Mild, short-term side effects are possible:
- temporary tiredness or mild fever for a day or two
- Slight soreness at the injection site (if local injection was used)
- Rare allergic or infused-related reaction — our team is fully prepared to respond if needed.
Less common but potential risks may include:
- Temporary blood pressure changes, chills, or mild nausea during or after infusion
- Local inflammation at the injection or IV site
- Headache, dizziness, or fatigue in the days following treatment
In rare cases, more serious complications (such as thromboembolic events or unexpected immune reactions) can occur, though these are uncommon under current safety practices
Most patients can travel once medically cleared, usually 1–2 days after therapy depending on their condition.
