Clinical evidence of the benefits of innovative stem cell therapies is growing rapidly worldwide. The Stem Cells Transplant Institute offers high-quality regenerative medicine to patients in the United States, Mexico, Central America, and the Caribbean.
Costa Rica is one of the pioneering countries in Latin America in the use of stem cell therapies; these treatments have been available in the country for several years now, and we want to extend their benefits to our neighboring countries. Patients in Guadalajara who wish to access these beneficial therapies can do so through the Stem Cell Transplant Institute, located in San José, Costa Rica.
Why hold it in Costa Rica instead of Guadalajara?
Costa Rica offers world-class medical services. The World Health Organization has ranked Costa Rica among the top three healthcare systems in Latin America. The country consistently ranks higher than many industrialized nations, including Canada and the United States.
Thanks to its cost advantages, high-quality care, safety, access to cutting-edge technologies, and its many tourist attractions, Costa Rica is one of the top destinations for medical tourism.
The Stem Cells Transplant Institute is a reputable, reliable, and safe institute that offers high-quality services. Our Executive Director, Dr. Leslie Mesén, is certified by the American Academy of Anti-Aging and Regenerative Medicine and serves as the director of the ISSCA (International Society for Stem Cell Application) for Central America and the Caribbean. The institute is a pioneer in the use of stem cell therapies in Costa Rica and Central America.
At our institute, we are committed to providing you with safe, high-quality stem cell therapies.
What is regenerative medicine?
Regenerative medicine is one of the most innovative medical approaches. The human body’s ability to heal itself is known as regeneration. This type of medicine seeks to harness the body’s regenerative potential to treat and cure conditions involving tissue regeneration, traumatic injuries, genetic disorders, and more. Regenerative medicine is currently a broad field of study. It primarily involves the use of stem cells and growth factors.
How do stem cells work?
The cells reach the site of the injury and differentiate into cells of the receiving tissue, providing a more abundant source of stem cells in the case of tissues that regenerate naturally, or offering the potential for regeneration in the case of tissues that do not regenerate naturally. For example, when the cells reach damaged cartilage, they differentiate into chondrocytes (the cells that form cartilage).
In addition, the cells reach the site of injury and stimulate self-repair mechanisms, revitalize the tissue, and preserve healthy tissue by releasing platelet-derived growth factors (molecules that regenerate and repair tissue).
What types of transplants are there?
A person can receive stem cells from themselves (autologous transplant) or from another person (allogeneic transplant). Stem cells from an autologous source are more compatible and safer.
How are stem cells transplanted?
Stem cells can be introduced or transplanted into the body through various routes; the most commonly used are: intralesional, intravenous, subcutaneous, intrathecal, or via nebulization.
What types of stem cells are there?
In simple terms, stem cells can be classified by origin into:
The Stem Cells Transplant Institute provides therapies using adult mesenchymal stem cells derived from adipose tissue and bone marrow, as well as cultured and expanded human umbilical cord-derived stem cells.
Do all clinics use the same procedures?
Specialized devices and reagents are used to process the donor sample, and internationally validated protocols are followed.¹ The cells undergo a process of extraction, washing, filtration, concentration, and quantification, which varies depending on the biological sample. It is very important for patients to ensure that procedures are performed at validated, certified facilities with experience in regenerative therapy. This is because some clinics do NOT offer high-quality therapies.
