What Are the Types of Autism Spectrum Disorders?

The term autism refers to a neurological imbalance that may cause several troublesome symptoms. They might face difficulties in communication, either with words or through emotions, outward appearances, and contact.

Furthermore, individuals with autism may have issues with learning. Their abilities may grow unevenly. For instance, they could experience difficulty in communicating, but such people are very talented and are good at crafting, music, and math. Along these lines, they may excel in the trial of analysis or critical thinking.

Types of Autism Spectrum Disorders

People with autism spectrum disorder face many challenges such as behavioral, social, and emotional. These issues are both severe and mild. Depending on symptoms people experience, there are four types of autism spectrum disorder characterized by the American Psychiatric Association in 2013. These include;

  • Autistic Disorder

The term autistic disorder is also called “classic” autism disorder. It generally comes in people’s mind when they hear the word “Autism”. Individuals with autistic disorder face many challenges such as delays in language, communication, and social interaction, day to day practices, and interests. Intellectual disability is also found in many individuals having an autistic disorder.

  • Asperger Syndrome

Individuals suffering from Asperger syndrome normally have milder signs of the autistic disorder compared to people with autistic disorder. They may have social difficulties and weird behaviors and interests. Such people usually don’t have issues with language or intellectual ability.

  • Pervasive Developmental Disorder – Not Otherwise Specified

Pervasive Developmental Disorder is sometimes called “atypical autism”. Individuals who meet a portion of the criteria for Asperger condition, yet not all, might be diagnosed to have atypical autism. These individuals ordinarily have less and milder symptoms than those with autistic disorder. These may only experience problems with being social and communication challenges.

  • Childhood disintegrative disorder

This is the most uncommon and serious type of ASD. It gradually affects kids and most of the affected ones don’t show any symptoms by the age of 2 years. Afterwards, it rapidly causes numerous social, linguistic, and mental disabilities, usually between ages 2 and 4.

At the time, there’s no cure for autism spectrum disorder. However, early treatment can have a major impact on the development of a youngster with autism. No matter what the type of condition is, your doctor will be able to design a treatment plan for you or your child.

Medications are very helpful with easing symptoms of ASD, like attention deficit, hyperactivity, or nervousness. Therapy for behavior and communication helps a lot. Applied behavior analysis(ABA) and cognitive behavioral therapy are the most common therapies used by physicians
to promote healthy living and improve the living standards of autistic people. Occupational therapy can help an individual with fundamental abilities like dressing, eating, and task identification. Another therapy called “sensory integration treatment” may help somebody who has issues with sights or sounds. Language training improves relational abilities.

People with ASD are also good candidates for stem cell therapy. Studies have shown that mesenchymal cells injected intravenously (IV) are safe and effective for all types of autism. It also helps with improving the immune system and neural connectivity in the brain.
